Finnish people use public transport and rental cars more than before. The boom in domestic tourism and the growth in the number of car-free people have driven car rental companies to a point where rental cars ran out in the summer of 2020.
Due to Covid19, car rental companies in Finland had to sell cars in the spring of 2020. Due to the lack of foreign tourists, the car rental companies decided to sell equipment, which left many Finns traveling with the domestic tourism boom without a rental vehicle.
“I currently rent a car from a neighbor. He doesn’t use his own car much, which makes it very possible to rent it to other people, ”says Salla, who rents a car from a neighbor.
The car is becoming a service. Traditionally, the car is strongly seen as a status symbol that has been mandatory to own. However, with the development of sharing economy services, the car is becoming a consumer product with a higher value than its status.
“I used to own a car, but due to low usage, I gave it up. At first, I always rented a car from a traditional car rental company for a summer vacation trip, but today I rent a car from a private person because of the flexibility and cheap price, ”Salla continues.
The popularity of privately owned rental cars grew tremendously in 2020. Bloxcar said demand grew 172 percent during the summer season compared to 2019.
“Last year, car capacity only started to run out in July, when demand for the summer season was the highest of all. We currently have more cars than last year, so we are ready for this year’s growth, ”says Konsta Lehikoinen from Bloxcar’s team.
BloxCar is a Finnish car peer rental service with about 25,000 registered users and more than 600 active cars. It is the largest peer-to-peer rental service in Finland in terms of number of users.
Rental cars ran out in Finland in the summer of 2020
Demand for rental cars from private car owners has grown exponentially. This is due to the proliferation of service platforms in the sharing economy. In the summer of 2020, there was extensive news in Finland about the end of car capacity also from traditional car rental companies.
“Right now, we need to strive to get more cars into service. In other words, car owners all over Finland would have a great opportunity to try peer rental at Bloxcar this summer. Demand is quite guaranteed, ”Konsta continues.
